World’s Largest Fishing Pole, a lil’ secret and a Lighthouse

January 8, 2010 Lana

We went to South Padre Island, Texas a few weeks ago.
When we went, we HAD to have seafood, so I’ll let you in on a little secret on a wonderful place to eat, it is called Dirty Al’s.
Doesn’t it sound awful?
{By the way, the word awful originally meant full of awe…yes, I home school and know way too much trivia.}

You can order a seafood botana and feed your entire family for pretty cheap.
I would suggest substituting the fish for popcorn shrimp, it makes it go further.  We love this place!
Sweet loving
My boys really loved it!  By the way, a Botana is very popular dish in this part of Texas.
Usually it is fajita meat loaded on a bed of tortilla chips accompanied by quesadillas and tortillas.
But, the seafood botana is all on French fries covered by fried oysters, fried shrimp, and fried fish.
(I was so hungry, I forgot to take a picture of the food.)

Brothers

This is their sign on the outside!  It is a fun place!

Sorry we are open

Here is the World’s Largest fishing pole.
{We are on an adventure to find all the World’s Largest anything and everything.}
It is actually in Port Isabel across the bridge from South Padre Island.  We took the picture from the bridge and it was kind of hazy.

The second picture is a little better.

Okay, not really – you’ll just have to go and see it for yourself.When you do, don’t forget to stop by the lighthouse.The gang Sweet guys and gal

At first everyone wanted to go to the top.
It is steep and narrow.

Stairway

Here are the stairs going up and up.  We got half-way up and then

Lighthouse Keepers from ground level.

these two decided they would rather be lighthouse keepers from the ground level.

Hope you enjoyed our mini-adventure!
Blessings to you!!!  You are loved!!!

    I LOVED your mini-adventure – and what is an adventure without food? Definitely not one in my book! It sounded delicious!

    My favorite dictionary is the Oxford English Dictionary which studies the history of a words evolvement in the language (like cheap) – You are a mom after my own heart!!!!

    You might like the definition of education from the Noah Webster 1828 Dictionary – It wouldn’t be allowed in the public schools today:

    I will definitely be back!

    That looks like so much fun! If you guys happen to come to KY any time soon we have the World’s Largest hand blown stained glass window in Covington. It’s beautiful! Just a bit east of Cincinnati, we also have the World’s Largest horseshoe crab. It was donated to a church by the Creation Museum and sits in a lovely biblical scripture garden.

    Of course, I’m also close to the World’s Largest Baseball Bat and Globe in Louisville. And I suppose KY wouldn’t be KY if we didn’t have the world’s largest bourbon barrel and bottle.

    Now, i’m going to go eat fish for lunch!

    What a great post! I’ve actually only been through TX, when I was moving to AZ. Isn’t that a shame? And my husband, when he was in high school, used to go to South Padre for spring break all the time. So, I’ve always wanted to go and check it out. I’m adding this restaurant to my TX file for our trip. Thanks for the pictures too. I’m such a visual kind of girl.
    And PS…I LOVE all of this “world’s biggest” stuff. What a FANTABULOUS adventure you all are on!
