I love old towns with rich history. It is fun to learn about the people and why things are nowadays. I want history to be fun and relevant to my children. Going to towns that are not on the usual tourist map Works for Me. Because if we learn from our “past” mistakes maybe – just maybe, we won’t repeat the same mistakes.
The park where we started our self-tour is called Goebel Park. It is named in memory of Governor William Goebel. He died 4 days from a gun wound, after being elected Governor. His family donated the land for this park.
Haven Gillespie, the man who wrote “Santa Claus is coming to town” comes from this town.
Isn’t this gorgeous!
This is the door to the bell tower…it was locked. Yes, we tried.
The backside….you can see this on your way to Cincinnati.
It was little man’s naptime….he was tuckered out! We tried and tried to wake him up with no avail.
I love having “school” field trips with our family. They didn’t even know we were having “school”.
Of course, having a photo op is part of the “learning” experience.
I just love these kids!!!
I love these two as well. Although, I wish little man would have been awake. I’m glad he doesn’t weigh very much for my hub’s sake.
I just love the old houses!
This was a mural…I wish I could have taken a better picture but it was HUGE!
This is the Goose Girl Fountain. Named after the Grimm’s fairytale, it represents the culture of the area when at one time there were a lot of geese farmers.
This was the reason we wanted to come and see the city…to get a feel for all the European style of housing. Europe without going to Europe.
It made me feel like I was back in Europe, sort of.Kentucky was a slave state. People would try to cross the Ohio river to get to freedom. This one slave killed her 3 year old when she was about to be caught so her baby wouldn’t have to go back into slavery. This story really affected my eldest when he read it on the sign. This was a very sad story…It truly made slavery become “real” to my son and not something you just read about in history books.
Since Covington is right across the Ohio river from Cincinnati, we saw these pianos from time to time. They are just sitting on the sidewalk welcoming anyone who will play them. How fun is that?
Doesn’t this just look like it belongs in Austria or Germany, not Kentucky? My lil’ Man’s face is just jaw dropping!
How have you taught your children without using books?
