The Princesses received a Butterfly Garden for Christmas.
It took us until March to send off for the caterpillars.
They came in regular mail.
Upside down. But, the caterpillars all survived.

A few days later, they crawled into the top of the cup and formed chrysalids.
We then had to take the paper disk and place it in the butterfly habitat.
Notice all the spider webby stuff – I did not have to touch it.

The future butterflies made it – so it went with then inside their new home.
The paper disk feels like a coffee filter.
The next day, my hubby was sweeping in our living room
and said “Hey, sweet, drop-dead gorgeous wife of mine – One of your caterpillars got out.”
and said “Hey, sweet, drop-dead gorgeous wife of mine – One of your caterpillars got out.”
I said, “Oh, Wonderful Husband – that cannot be true! They are all Chrysalids! There is no possible way!”
He replied: “My dear- beautiful –skinny- all I need to breathe wife – well here is another.”
(Words in italics may have been stretching the truth just a tad for effect – but I’m sure they were thought.)
So, we scooped it up and placed it in the empty cup that the other caterpillars came in. (It is supposed to have food in it for them.) I then added a coffee filter to the top. In a couple of days, it had formed a cocoon. It does NOT look the same but is a lot more furry.
We are curious to see if it will turn into a moth or butterfly.
Here is a FREE Lapbook for Butterflies! I’m in love with lapbooks! They help my whole family learn about a subject using creativity! We try to do one a week!
Within a FEW days:
A beautiful thing happened!
A NEW Creature!
Have you ever heard of the children’s song,
Bullfrogs and Butterflies?
Bullfrogs and Butterflies?
We used to sing it as children. It talks about a caterpillar being born again into a butterfly. What an awesome illustration of what Jesus Christ does in our lives.
Another resource we use is Max Lucado’s Hermie book.
In fact, my daughter said “Mom – look this is what happened to Hermie in my book!”
I love when my children connect the dots in their lives.
I happen to be giving away this book set (including Hermie: A Common Caterpillar)!
It is a super easy entry! It would be a great book set to give someone for Easter.
Now all my kids are constantly looking for caterpillars. I think this has been one of the neatest gifts for the entire family.
Next, I would like to try an ant farm. Has anyone ever made their own?
Blessings to you! You are loved!

Stef – Trust me I didn’t touch it. If it would have involved me touching something crawling with my bare hands – I would have had the kids do it. 🙂
