Bookshelves – organized by color

April 27, 2010 Lana

It was a quick tip that led to a quick task.
My name should be…
the-lady-with-her-nose-in-the-books-including-cookbooks-and-any-type-of-appliance-manuals.
I love to read and to teach my kids to read and the love of reading.
That means we own a lot of books.  If I had my way, every room would have bookshelves.
(Now that I think of it…they do!)
Last week, I posted about talking to Martha Stewart and organizing everything by color.
That seems like months ago.  How time flies!
So here are a couple of shelves…I got to tell you – they look better in person.

(My hubs and step-dad built that shelf…didn’t they do great?)
The one below is still not complete…I just got busy with something else and forgot.
(Probably once a month cooking!)

Since the majority of the task was finished – I still took a picture.
The little readers do not like to stay straight up so I’m working on some bookends.IMG_3615 Close-up of kids Shelf

Instead of getting a full picture of the shelf – this guy got my attention.

He was right beside the shelf – playing on the cat’s toy (also something my husband made).

Now it is apparently the Lego Tower instead of Cat Tower.

Do you see that ugly brown paneling on the left wall?  It is about to be destroyed!  Yes!  All the Angels are singing “Hallelujah”!  We are about to totally re-do the playroom, kitchen, living room and yes getting new floors.  It is called Big Home Renovation Remodel 2010!
We are doing this ourselves!  Every little thing…can you say CRAZY?!!?
(Don’t tell my hubs but I think he is a little loco in the head – but I agreed, so I’m a little loco as well.)
Please be ready to come back and see the changes!
Until next time…
Blessings to you!!!  You are loved!!!

I did this once, and I think I’ll do it again. I’ve been irritated lately by the visual clutter and wondering what to do about it. I’m glad I found this post today!

I’m not sure about organizing by color. Sure it looks great. But how do you FIND the books you want?

Well…organizing books by color, that’s something worth thinking seriously about. I’m a librarian (really…I am). Plenty of times I’ve had a conversation something like this:

Patron: “Excuse me…I’m looking for a book.”

Me: “Do you know the title?”

Patron: “I can’t remember the title…but it was red.”

It looks great! I might have to try that on our bookshelves, they are very unappealing to the eye. 🙂

I played too, you can check out my tackle here. 🙂

I still organized the shelves by some order other than color. Like all my cookbooks are on the same shelf and all my parenting books are also on another part of the shelf.

I do use my books for reference so I still needed to be able to find them.

It will save me some heartache later, when I see Legos all over the floor – I can just look at the shelves in the middle of chaos and find relief. 🙂

I’ve never thought of decorating bookshelves by colour before! It does look really good.

But can you still find stuff? I think it would work well for kids’ books, but what about reference books?

Oh, who am I kidding? We all know we rarely read those books again anyway. We just keep them around to impress people, so who cares if we can’t find them? 🙂
