The Doors and The Electric Company in our Renovation Kitchen Reality (Part 12)

June 14, 2010 Lana

Quick Poll:
Would you be crazy brave enough to do a remodel?  Have you done one?  (
I’d like to see it – leave a link in the comments!)   If you don’t have a link – just tell me something you learned.  Thanks!
the door with no purposeDo you see this door?  It served no purpose.
the doors
We took down the wall in between the two doors.  We were glad to remove it.  More like jumping for joy – kind of glad.
gone with a door - in with a wall
My hubs built a new wall for the empty space.
aligned
Gotta align it just right….
perfect
I mean exact.  If there is anything I have learned these past two weeks, it is that my hubs is a perfectionist about this job.
Drives me nuts!
Thank God he is the foreman and I’m the….well,  the supervisor.
We get along well – unless we are tape and floating.  That is a whole other post for another year.
 just right, again.
Again, jusssst right.
and again
I mean perfect to a T.
POW
Then comes the LOUD shooter thing.  It is like the king of hammers (aka Pneumatic Nailer) and is not afraid to say so.
looks confusing
Then comes the plugs.  This  looks confusing.
Let me try to explain:
The black wire is called the HOT wire.
I know – hot should be red.
(I didn’t make up the wire colors or it would be at least pink.)
The gold wire is the “ground wire”.  I like the gold one.
Then we have the white one.  It is the neutral wire.
Happy Face
This is front of the “receptacle.”
  Vanna White the electrician
My Vanna White talent demonstrating how to wire a receptacle.  (That is my “work” hair-do.  I know…awesome.  haha)

You have to strip the wires a little to fit on the screws.    That tool in my hand is amazing.  I think it is called a stripper (I could be wrong.  But, that is my name for it.)backsideI don’t know if you are like me…but I had never looked at the back of a plug before.  It was rather interesting.  Each screw is important.  Live black wires need to go on the gold screws.  White wires go on the silver screws and the ground wire goes on the lonely screw on top.  Plus, there was even a ruler that measures how much you should cut the rubber thingy off the wires.
All Done!
There ya’ go!  All done.
Let me just say…don’t try this if you are scared or never done it before -without consulting someone who knows what 480 means.  If they don’t understand that – then you probably don’t want to take counsel from them.
(I called my brother, who is a Master Electrician.  He warned me but later decided I could do this with my hub’s supervision.)
One more warning:  if done incorrectly, you could have major consequences – I’m sure fried ice cream is not one of them but fried fingers, fried house, fried skillets…you probably get the picture.

We’ve been remodeling our house, apparently on the 15 year plan. We’ve done most of the same things you are doing, and I blogged about most, right down to the electric plugs. lol Great minds think alike.

We did our kitchen last summer. I will NEVER do it again. In our next house, the kitchen is staying the same. It was very stressfull, and, of ocurse, took a LOT longer then expected. This is before http://scrapingirl.blogspot.com/2009/08/oh-my.html

This is after http://scrapingirl.blogspot.com/2009/09/i-can-cook-now.html I’m missing a complete wall, but you get the picture. 🙂

Wow – these are great pictures! And what a lot of work. 🙂 We renovated a few rooms several years ago because we discovered mold in the walls. Uck. Not fun, but boy was it worth it in the end. Hang in there!

May the LORD bless you and keep you; May the LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; May He turn His face toward you and give you peace. Feel free to leave a comment - we LOVE to hear your thoughts! ~Blessings to you!~ ~You are so loved!~ ~Lana (Like Banana)~
