Teaching my kids Scripture…

May 31, 2011 Lana

I have 5 kids, a very impolite dog, 6 chickens, 14 fish, one half remodeled house with no end in sight, and 76 library books due this week.

Who has time to teach God’s Word?  I don’t even have time to go to the bathroom!

Let me just say:  I do make time to teach my kids  – God’s Word.  The Holy Bible.  New King James Version – most of the time.  We look up the Hebrew, Arabic or Greek translations of the Word when we want to see the original text.  Our whole curricula is founded on the Word of God.  We talk about God’s Word, a lot.

Here is the kicker:
I don’t teach them scriptures just to memorize for the sake of memorizing.  I teach them so they can grow with understanding.  I want them to KNOW God’s Word.  I want them to live through it with true freedom and not legalism.  I want them to KNOW that it is LIFE!  It is something they can take with them even up to death.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 {Shema}
(New International Version)

4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.[a] 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Being a Christian Mom, I STRIVE to practice “the Shema.”  Talking and explaining God’s Word every chance we get.

The “hiding The Word in your heart” then becomes 2nd nature because it is what it is – it is real life!

Now, I am not a Bible scholar.  I need help!  I need others to help me – like a village!

I pray for God’s guidance daily hourly.

I also use lots of resources.

One of them that helps us learn is listening to certain things when we ride in the car.  My kids are strapped in and they can’t go anywhere!  A great time to have a lesson!  Not to mention, I’m doing 2 things at once.

Have you heard of SEEDS?
logo_hm
It is an awesome way to plant seeds or scripture.  They are songs that are pure scripture.  I love it!

Each package contains two identical CDs – one to keep and one to give to a friend.  I love that!!!  Spreading seeds!

It has opened up a way to converse about God’s Word.  Plus, I’ve caught them singing God’s Word in the other room, by themselves.   That brings so much joy to my heart.

Right now, Seeds is offering Purchasers 20% off their purchase of cd’s at the web store (www.seedsmusicstore.com) for the next 6 months!!

Here is a sample of one of their videos!  Love it!

I will strive my hardest to teach God’s Word was not written as just law but is a book of love.

If I don’t succeed, I know that God is able to use whatever means to steer them in the right direction.  He is all-powerful, all-knowing, All in All, and He just parents better than I ever could or will!

Blessings to you!  You are soooo loved!
