Everyday it’s a gettin’ closer (Kitchen Remodel Pt 18)

June 27, 2010 Lana

Decorating during a remodel is probably not recommended by most professionals. GladiolasBut, I just couldn’t help myself.   Not to mention, we are not professionals.
We do this because we love each other.
Kitchen barI had flowers from my own garden and a bar that we built because we love each other.   Floating... Now my hubs was floating the “lost” sheet-rock.  It was found under the ugly 70’s paneling.
We removed it because it did not represent our “love.”Decorated Living Room He stayed up until the wee early hours in the morning finishing up.  I would have helped but we have decided it is better for our marriage and showed true “love” if I don’t help him floating.
(I think if we did it over, it would be more flexible…don’t even ask about the gorilla glue incident.  Oh, I will BLOG about that one soon…be ready to laugh!) Pretty BarTaped and Floated bar showing the love…Let there be light Let there be LIGHT!Pacmans Have you ever seen these before?
They are my lazy Susans (they look like huge Pac-mans)!New cabsThese are my cabinets for the bar.  The lazy Susans are going in that corner!  Granite is going on top-talk about LOVE!  Whohoo! ovens...My oven (how I missed thee!) IMG_3969 The tape and floated walk-in pantry!IMG_3970 And, my other custom built cabinets!  We actually built them all by ourselves.  Can’t wait for them to go in…IMG_3971 This is my pantry door.  It just looks so sad against that wall-don’t worry, it has a special place.IMG_3972The song by Buddy Holly seems to fit best for us…
Everyday it’s a gettin’ closer
Going faster than a roller coaster…
…Everyday it seems a little stronger
Everyday it lasts a little longer…
Blessings to you!!!  You are loved!!!

I am so excited for you and your kitchen remodel! We remodeled our kitchen in our last house in order to sell it. We figured that if it didn’t sell, we would put in a kitchen that we knew we would like. My husband worked at a cabinet shop and had seen all the latest and greatest ideas. One that I was not so excited about ended up being my favorite thing in the entire kitchen.
We started off with 42″ cabinets that went all the way to the ceiling. Our kitchen was very small, so this was vital. He put lazy susan uppers in the corners of our kitchen, with the spinning shelves and all. You would be surprised at how much stuff you can fit in those cabinets, all of our plates, bowls, and cups for a family of 7 fit on the bottom and second shelf leaving the top for plenty of other stuff. The cabinet I wasn’t so sure about was a large cabinet over the refrigerator. It came out as far as the refrigerator and was as wide. The sides of the cabinet encased the cabinet as well as the fridge. But the best part of the cabinet was the dividers he put in it. I was able to put all my baking pan, pie plates, cutting boards (because he forgot to put them in the lowers. LOL) as well as some casserole dishes. It was wonderful!!!!! I also liked my over the stove microwave. We got the ventless kind so we didn’t have to install a ventbox in the big middle of the cabinet above the stove.
I’m sorry this was such a long comment, I hope I was able to help you in some way.
    Best of luck!

Julia from Hooked on Houses tweeted your link, so I thought I’d drop by. What a great project — I’m sure you love the open space already!:)

There seems to be two schools of thought for upper cabinets – open shelves or cabinets. What you could ask yourself is what they’ll be used *for*.

Bowls can be pretty on open shelves; cereal boxes not so much.

With a family of five, will they put everything on the bottom shelf where they can reach? Or ask you to put things away?

It also depends on the climate you live in – in the drier areas, shelves tend to collect a lot more dust.

Ultimately in a family situation, I believe there’s more storage with cabinets, and less arranging to make everything look balanced and neat.

Looking forward to seeing what you end up with.

    wow what a big project!

i’m not really in love with my cupboards. (Actually just posted about this today). I’d love to have open shelving for my top cupboards.

We just redid our kitchen (still finishing up a few things) and this is what I love….our cabinets are 14 inches deep instead of the standard 12. I have three cabinets above/around the microwave and the middle one sticks out 2 inches farther and about 6 inches taller. Same thing around the fridge. Gives the whole kitchen a much more custom look.

Yours is looking good…can’t wait to see it all done.

Wow! This is an ambitious renovation. Those Lazy Susan’s are going to be great. I have to get on my knees with a flashlight to find pans in the corner of my standard cabinet. Looks like you are going to have a fabulous kitchen.

    All the Best,

    Requi

I love the flowers. It’s like a ray of hope and a reminder that this will be a home again soon.

My sweet and wonderful husband doesn’t do any of the taping and floating. That’s all left to me. So the love flows in different ways around here. 🙂

I am really enjoying watching the progress. Lisa~
