Our family has just finished the largest DIY project ever, our entire home.

Back After with Pergola

[wpsr_pinterest]

For the last 4, 5, 6, few years, we have worked day and night on basically every part of our home.

Personally, I have learned how to (or at least helped and watched my hubby):

  • sheetrock
  • tape and float
  • lay and cut tile
  • grout
  • paint with a sprayer
  • install windows and siding
  • roof a house
  • build a fort out of old fence
  • make raised gardens
  • make Green Bean Tepees
  • design and make a chicken coop out of fence boards
  • help my Grandma turn her home Grandma’s Cottage

I can now say I know how to use a wet saw, a table saw, a miter saw and even a chainsaw.

Even as I am writing this – I’m laughing because my Grandma would call me just “a prissy little thing, who would never get dirty.”  I love my Grandma but I really enjoyed learning doing these DIYs.  They were extremely fun and the knowledge I gained was priceless.

One simple weekend project that we really enjoyed doing as a family is adding a flower bed and a pergola.

All the supplies are easily attainable at Home Depot.
Before you dig
in the ground, please sure to call 811 for your safety.  Plus, it is free!

Supplies needed:

  • Flowers
  • Tiller (If your soil has never been turned over before or you just don’t want to use a shovel.)
  • Potting Soil
  • Fertilizer (if needed)
  • Edging
  • Landscape Fabric (Essential if you hate to weed.)
  • Mulch

Directions:

  1. Lay out a hose or rope in a random pattern to make an edge for your garden bed.
We always try to make it curvy so it will be more natural looking than having a straight rectangular line.
  2. Dig to loosen the soil around the rope or hose.  (Till the area if need be.)
  3. Put edging down where your rope or hose laid.
  4. Lay landscaping down.  Pin with landscaping pins if needed.
  5. Place plants how you would like them.  We always try to use odd numbers of any one kind of plant to make it more pleasing to the eye.
  6. Cut X’s for flowers in the landscaping fabric.
  7. Plant flowers and add fertilizer if needed.

Here are all the before and afters of our DIY Backyard.

Back Yard Landscaping

And this was after:

We also painted the back siding and added a few more decorations.

Backyard Landscaping

Right before the photos there was a huge gust of wind and blew our neighbors oak leaves into the fresh mulch – I didn’t notice until just now.  Black mulch is so nice but leaves do show up more if they are blown in compared to brown or red mulch.

DIY Pergola

We always buy small plants and let them grow into bigger ones.  It is more cost effective plus they are just fun to watch the landscape transform into something beautiful.

I will be writing more about How To Build the Pergola in a future post.

Blessings to you!  You are loved!
